CHILDHOOD

  • Born: Delft October 24, 1632
  • Fathers family were basket makers
  • Mothers family were brewers
  • Educated in the town of Warmond
  • 1648: apprenticed to a fabric merchant

YOUNG LIFE

  • 1654: self employed as a draper
  • Also worked as a wine assayer, surveyor, city official
  • 1668: learned how to grind lenses/ use magnification
  • Inspired by Robert Hooke's Micrographia
  • 1671: made simple microscopes

SIMPLE MICROSCOPES

  • 3-4 inches long
  • Powerful magnifying lenses (not compound)
  • Uses one lens mounted between two brass plates
  • Specimen was mounted on the tip of a screw
  • Held up to the eye and adjusts using two screws

ROYAL SOCIETY

  • Fellowship of intelligent scientists
  • Sent letters depicting some of his discoveries
  • Ex:research on skin, blood and bee stings
  • He remained in the society for the rest of his life

DISCOVERY OF 1674- INFUSORIA

  • September 7, 1674: he described his observation of lakewater
  • Description of green charophyte algae is surprisingly accurate
  • Ex: Protozoa & unicellular algae
Protozoa: single celled eukaryotic that show characteristics associated with animals

Unicellular algae: carry out photosynthesis accessory pigments that help algae absorb light give them a variety of colors
