  • Anneliese Marie Frank born June 12th, 1929
  • Parents Otto and Edith
  • Older sister Margot

Background

  • Franks lived a normal life
  • Hitler becomes chancellor on January 1st, 1933
  • Forced to move to Amsterdam in February, 1934

Background

  • Amsterdam was perfect until May of 1940 when former rules came to them
  • Had to register as Jews in 1942 and wear the Yellow Stars
  • Now had curfews, banned from public places, no telephone

Background

  • On 13th birthday, received first diary, "kitty"
  • Wrote day after day in diary

EVENT

  • July 1942: Nazi's began deportations to Eastern Europe
  • July 5th, 1942: Margot gets deportation letter
  • Next day, Franks go into hiding in food shop Secret Annex
  • Later joined by Herman Van Pels and family in July, and later Fritz Pfeffer
  • Anne continued to write about fears, hopes, and joys

Event

  • Annex very small, allowed limited movement
  • Supplies brought by four of Otto's employee's
  • As war went on, Annex lacked food
  • By now, Anne filled multiple diaries

EVENT

  • August 4, 1944: SS receive tip and raid annex
  • Everyone taken into custody, along with the 4 helpers
  • Franks, Van Pels, and Pfeffef taken to westerbork camp, later Aushwitz
  • October 6th, Anne and Margot moved to Bergen-Beisen camp
  • January 27th, Otto liberated and returned to Amsterdam

Event

  • Feb/March 1945: Anne and Margot die of typhus
  • Otto learned only one to survive from annex in July
  • Miep Gies gave Otto all of Anne's writings saved from Annex
  • Diary eventually published by Otto
