ELL Technology Presentation

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Animationish

By Fable Vision

Animationish

  • Provides Integrated Learning-Art & Technology
  • Has three different difficulty levels, so appropriate for all ages.
  • Allows students to partake in multimedia presentations.
  • Students can visually present concepts and knowledge when written language is challenging.
  • It's fun!
Good strategies for ELL's included Integrated Curriculum, multimedia projects, and visual scaffolding.
(A. Herrel & M. Jordan)

There are three levels. Wiggledoodle-ish is for very young students and cycles three slides to get used to the concept.
Flipbook-ish is the next level. It allows longer animations, but still one frame.
Advanced-ish is the most advanced, allowing movement, key frames, foreground, and background movements.

Animation provides it's own scaffolding. The teacher can demonstrate different levels and the students can work through the levels as they become ready!

Animationish has a palate with many colors. You just click on the color circle and dozens of different colors, hues, and shapes pop up. There is drawing tool, arrow selector, fill can, and most importantly an "undo" button.

Many tools are available with Animationish. It provides visual icons so that you understand the command without understanding the word. It also lowers the affective filter, so that students can express concepts without the embarassment or fear that often affects them (Sousa p. 55).

Flipbookish is a good level for many students. Students can draw what they like and see each frame at the bottom of the screen. It has the ability to loop, so they can see there work move, with as few as three frames. Animation also has a mathematical component! There are three speeds for playback--slow, medium, and fast.

Students can do lots of neat things with this software. Including self-portraits or fictional stories. Files are exported using the program quicktime, so it is easy to send out files or upload to Vimeo or Youtube.

Dog
sketch!

Students can draw animals, or find animals from the library and make them their own. This program would be great for habitats, or even illustrating math concepts!

Advancedish is the most sophisticated level. It allows students to do a foreground and a background. Has a "truck" mover tool and an art library. It is very user friendly and allows students the ability to do some sophisticated animation without perfect fine motor skills!

Advanced-ish is sophisticated enough to produce professional cartoons. They could also be edited together for a classwide project!

Great
way for
students
to tell a
story visually!

Visual storytelling is so great for ELL's as it gives them the ability to understand the components of a good story, even if academic English is still a challenge!

Animationish

  • Scaffolded for different developmentaly levels.
  • Versatile-can be used for multiple subjects.
  • User friendly.
  • Easy to get a good looking animated pieces with the visual library.
  • Has undo buttons, erasers, and ability to change sizes and move objects/subjects.
