PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Animal Testing

Is it morally justified

What they do

  • Mice are "genetically engineered to develop cancer." (Currie, 2013, pg 2)
  • Monkeys are "intentionally paralyzed from brain damage." (Currie, 2013, pg 2)
  • Dogs are "force fed pesticides and other chemicals." (Currie, 2013, pg 2)

Taking away rights

  • Animals' can't speak for themselves like humans can
  • They can't say whether they want to be tested on or not
  • They will never be given the chance to live a happy and free life
  • "Animals and people are alike in many ways; they both feel, think, behave and experience pain." (Lonestar, 2015, pg 1)

Risk

  • All experiments aren't successful.
  • May work for animals but not humans.
  • "Many people also believe that animals are inferior to humans and very different from them, hence results from animals cannot be applied to humans." (Hajar, 2011, pg 1)

Benefits

  • With animals available it gives humans hope (Trull, 2015, pg 1).
  • Many of the developments have come from animal testing (Trull, 2015, pg 2)

Reasons to keep testing

  • "We share 95% of our genes with a mouse, making them and effective model for the human body." (Understanding Animal Research, 2014, pg1)
  • "Thanks to animal research, primarily in mice, cancer survival rates have continued to rise." (Understanding Animal Research, 2014, pg1)
  • "Animal research is responsible for the development of asthma inhalers; asthma still kills around 2000 people in the UK every year." (Understanding Animal Research, 2014, pg1)

Statistics

  • "The UK consumes over 300 times more fish each year then the total number of all animals used in medical research each year." (Understanding Animal Research, 2014, pg 2)
  • "Household cats kill approximately 5 million animals every week - more than the total number of animals used in medical research every year." (Understanding Animal Research, 2014, pg 2)

Conclusion

who's right is it to decide?
