PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ANIMAL TESTING

BY LUIS ARREDONDO AND PARKER SAHM

BACKGROUND

  • Animals are used to test various medicines and drugs
  • They are used because human testing is considered more unethical
  • Animals have had a vital part in nearly every medical breakthrough over the last decade
  • About 85% of the research animals are rats and mice
  • There's only one law regarding the welfare of test animals: the Animal Welfare Act

PROS

  • Animals have extremely similar structures to humans
  • It saves lives
  • It's more ethical (to some people) to test animals instead of humans

CONS

  • The animals aren't usually anesthetized for experiments, so they are hurt
  • It's expensive to house, feed, and care for the animals
  • It is immoral (for some people) to test helpless animals for medical purposes

QUESTIONS

  • Should scientists be free to pursue their investigations regardless of risk?
  • No, scientists should take potential risks into account and stop their investigations if they are likely to cause great damage.
  • Should they publicize every discovery they make?
  • They should publicize their discoveries, unless the publication would cause an uproar that would prevent any further research from occurring
