INVERTEBRATES

CHAPTER 1

SPONGES

  • They only have 2 layers of cells
  • They are the simplest animal
  • Sponges filter the water that. They live in to get food
  • They come in all shapes colors and sizes
  • They are Phylum Porifera

CNIDERIANS

  • All cnidarians are poisonous
  • All of them sting
  • They have no organs just cell tissue
  • They are Phylum Cnidaria that stands for stinging animals
  • Cnidarians don't have eyes

FLAT WORMS

  • Flat worms have a flat body
  • They have a simple nervous system
  • They only have 1 opening to digestive system

ROUND WORMS

  • Have a digestive system with 2 openings
  • They have a round tube like body
  • They reproduce sexually

SEGMENTED WORMS

  • They are more complex than other worms
  • They have a circulatory system
  • They have a brain
  • They breath through their skin
  • Both male and female lay eggs

MOLLUSKS

  • Octopus or squid have beaks
  • Mantle makes shells
  • Mollusks include oysters, slugs, squid, and octopus
  • If no shell they have tough skin
  • Snails have two tentacles two to see and two to feel

ARTHROPODS

  • Spiders aren't insects
  • Insects have 6 jointed legs
  • Archnids have 8 legs
  • Crustaceans have 3 body segments
  • Insects are the only invertebrates that can fly

ECHINODERMS

  • All have Spiny skin
  • Have no brain
  • Can reproduce asexually
  • Most produce sexually
  • Only live in ocean

VERTEBRATES

FISH

  • Bony fish have a swim bladder
  • Bony fish are important food to humans
  • Jawless fish don't have a jaw
  • Cartilaginous fish give live birth
  • Cartilaginous fish have no bones

AMPHIBIANS

  • Are cold blooded
  • Live part of their life in water and part in air
  • Smallest class of vertebrates
  • Adults breath in 3 ways: lungs,skin,and roof of mouth
  • They go from 2 chambered hearts to 3 chambered hearts

REPTILES

  • Some lizards and snakes give live birth
  • All snakes are meat eaters
  • Komodo agnostic usually eat already dead animals
  • Young Komodo dragons live in trees so their not eaten or killed
  • All reptiles are cold blooded

BIRDS

  • They are warm blooded
  • They have a four chambered heart
  • They are the only animals with feathers
  • Swans have the same mate for life
  • All lay eggs

MAMMALS

  • Females have Maseru glands to feed their baby's
  • Only animals that have fur
  • Most animals give live bith but the duckbill platypus and two other anteaters
  • Bats are the only mammals that can fly
  • Duckbill platypus males have poison for fighting other males for females
