THEME
People who use power for personal gain lack good character.

NAPOLEON

  • Napoleon changes the farm rules for his and the pigs own personal gain.
  • "No animal shall kill another animal without cause." (Orwell 63)
  • He made the pigs change this rule to make it okay for him to discipline animals who disobeyed rules.
  • Napoleon overall manipulated the animals into thinking that all of his actions were good.

JOSEPH STALIN

  • Dictator of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics from 1929-1953.
  • Ruled by terror; millions of citizens died during his rule.
  • "The soviet union was transformed from a pleasant society into an industrial and military superpower."
  • Took control over farms.
  • Killed anyone who opposed him.

HOW IS NAPOLEON ALLEGORICALLY IMPORTANT TO THE BOOK?

  • George Orwell uses Napoleon to symbolize Joseph Stalin during the Russian Revolution.
  • Napoleon took over the entire farm just like Stalin would take over farms during his rule.
  • Napoleon used propaganda by changing the farm rules.

Both Napoleon and Joseph Stalin killed people who went against them.
