  • Anglo Saxons were actually 3 tribes the Angle, the Saxon, and the Jutes

Anglo Saxons

  • Anglo Saxon tribes invaded Britain in the 5th and 6th centuries. They traveled across the North Sea in wooden boats to England. With the intentions of overruling Britain. Dividing land into kingdoms each of course with its own royal family.

  • When Anglo Saxons arrived they came upon towns built by Romans which had fallen to ruins. Small towns were built containing only 2-3 families. Houses were made out of wood with thatched roofs. Each house had only one room.

THE ANGLO SAXON PEOPLE

  • Anglo Saxon people were either freemen or slaves. Freemen ownef land and slaves. The richest freemen were called "Thanes" who helped the king rule his land.

Consequences of crime for the anglo saxons

  • During that era prisons were not applicable. Therefor most delequant were punished with fines. Although a murdere would have been fined to pay money to the victim's family. For minor crimes, a person's nose or hand may have been choped off.

THE ANGLO SAXON'S BELIEFS

  • The early Anglo Saxons were pagans meaning they believed in many gods.The dead were cremated or buried with their belongings to use in the next life. From 400-696 A.D., Anglo Saxons slowly converted to christianity. Tyhey built many churches and monesteries. The Anglo Saxon children spent years in prayer.

  • One of the traditions of the Anglo Saxon people was to bury their dead along with their belongings.

  • The Anglo Saxon loved stories. The most popular Beowulf. It was written in the 8th and 9th centuries. They also loved music. Riddle were also a favorite past time.

Angle saxon influence

  • The 6 centuries of the Anglo Saxon rule left a lasting influence on England. Many places are still called by their Amglo Saxon name.

what happened to the anglo saxons?

  • In the 8th and 9th centuries, vikings from Scandinavia began invading Britain. Vikings massacred the Anglo Saxon people, destroyed churches, and stole valuables. The Anglo Saxon period ended in 1066.
