HISTORY AND BACKGROUND OF CAREER

  • Anesthesiology is a relevant profession in U.S because it eliminated the pain of surgery for patients, it has been around for 170 years
  • It was originated by John Collins Warren (who is a historical figure of anesthesiology) at the Massachusetts General hospital in October 1846 (first successful surgery using anesthetic)
  • In May 2000 Great Britain held the first anesthetic day honoring the career

REQUIREMENTS TO OBTAIN CAREER

  • Education: a bachelor in pre-medical study, doctor of medicine training: residency in anesthesiology and fellowship of anesthesiology
  • Colleges: Everest, Kaplan, and ashford
  • Related jobs: nurse anesthetist, physician assistant, pharmacist, practitioners, and medical scientists
  • Personalities/ skills: communication skills are key and a optimistic attitude and focus

OBTAINING A CAREER PT 2

  • Opportunities: shadowing a doctor or anesthesiologist in college/ high school is highly recommended
  • Best route: take required science and medical classes if offered during high school AP classes if possible

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Daily duties: to put patients undergoing surgery under anesthetic, which is a huge job because the amount of anesthetic given to each patient varies in weight, height, and how long the surgery will take
  • Big picture: anesthesiologists make surgery easier and painless for patients during the surgery, without them the medical system would crumble
  • Dress code: scrubs and sometimes a lab coat

JOB DESCRIPTION PT 2

  • Hours: 12 hour shifts but on call for 24 hours but unbothered on days off and given long vacations
  • Help: anesthesiologist assistants assist anesthesiologists during surgery
  • Benefits: 401K plan, competitive compensation, relocation opportunities, professional development plan, flexible spending plan
  • Income: median pay is 240,000 yearly

JOB REFLECTION

  • Challenges: lots of schooling, on call 24/7, very stressful because the patient could be given too much anesthetic or not enough
  • Job market: projected to grow 18% from 2012-2024
  • Economic downturns: not many people go into this profession so not many economic downturns its a solid job

  • Local businesses: there are 14 major hospitals looking for anesthesiologists in Michigan and around the macomb county area
  • Hundreds of job opportunities all over the coubtry
  • Trends: this job affects occupants because of the on call 24 hours while working because it's unlikely to have that in any field besides medical

CONCLUSION

  • Importance to society: recreated surgery and made surgery much more easier this would be a good career for me because it's high paying and its early retirement and I'm very interested in the medical field
