ANDERSONVILLE POW CAMP

BACKROUND

  • North and south were very over crowded around 100 soldiers were killed or died per day
  • In June therefore were around 22,000 men by August there were around 32,899 men
  • Some times they would allow locals women to come and bring food but it was not always for the prisoners mainly for the guards
  • The prison was Isolate from towns so if the prisoners did escape they would not have anywhere to hide

HEALTH CONCERNS

  • During the time in the Andersonville camp sanitation facilities and medical attention weren't existent
  • The camp was known for the horrible conditions and the commander had no care for the human life
  • Outside of the camp the people would bathe,use the restroom, and dogs and horses feces would be dumped into the creek leading to the camp so by the time it got to the prisoners it was toxic and held disease

INTENTIONS OF CREATION

  • This camp was intended to ease the pressure on smaller prison camps around the confederacy
  • The blockade was build to hold up to 10,000 men
  • This prison was build around a creek for drinking water,and a rail road around it to bring in prisoners and other uses
  • This camp was made for Union and Confederate soldiers

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED

  • They were almost never given food,blankets,and clothes, Andersonville was only open for 14 months
  • Men by the hundred would huddle together for warmth, but many would be dead by morning and would be carried to the death homes
  • The mouth would become infected and gums would swell,and would come together and then the men would be unable to chew any solid food so then they would die from starvation
  • There we almost no laws in the camp so thieves and attacks would happen

PUNISHMENT

  • If a prisoner would to get over the wall they would be shot and killed immediately
  • They would allow local women to come and gawk at the men
  • No prisoner must cross the dead line nor attempt to buy,sell,or trade with a sentinel and if they were to cross the line they would be shot immediately

THIEVES IN THE YARD

  • If a prisoner would refuse to give yup their items they would be beat or even killed
  • They would find the "new fish" and "help" them by placing the group around a wall near no one so at night they could corner them and take everything
  • Six of many were eventually caught and hanged in front of all prisoners

HENRY WIRZ

  • He was a physician in Louisiana when the civil war started he enlisted in the fourth Louisiana Battalion
  • Henry was born in Switzerland 1823,but moved to the United States 1849
  • After the stagecoach accident he returned to duty with a hurt arm and the arm never healed
  • Was the commander of the Andersonville camp

HENRY'S TRIAL

  • Was found guilty after having 2 month long trial
  • Was sentenced to death row on November 10th,1865 in Washington,D.C. He was 41
  • There were around 160 witnesses of murder
  • They sold out of tickets to watch Henry get hanged so people would hide in trees, along with 13 counts of murder
  • Henry denied being guilty and said he was just obeying orders
