CHARACTERIZATION

  • Characters: The Judge, Dr. Armstrong, Mr. Blore, Mr. Marston
  • Vera Claythorne, General Macarthur, Mr/Mrs Rogers
  • Philip Lombard, and Emily Brent.
  • Major events that happen include all the characters finding out about
  • Each other's pasts and the murders they were convicted of.

CHARACTERIZATION

  • Anthony Marston is the first death.
  • Cause of death was drinking acid.
  • In this chapter we learn of all of
  • The characters pasts and murders.

IMAGERY

  • Primary images in this chapter include:
  • 1)"Lombard looked thoughtfully at the
  • man's twitching face, his dry lips, the
  • fright in his eyes." This is important b/c
  • it shows the clear scene of who the Rodgers let die.

IMAGERY

  • 2)"His face contorted, turned purple. He gasped for breath-then
  • slid down off his chair, the glass falling from his hand."
  • This is important because it gives a clear image of Anthony
  • Marston's death when he drank the acid.

IMAGERY

  • 3)"There was a silence I'm the room. Everybody was
  • looking , covertly or openly, at Emily Brent."
  • The importance of this is that it shows an image of
  • everyone curiously wondering and waiting to hear
  • Emily say what she did and if it was true.

MOOD

  • In Chapter 4, the feeling we get from it is
  • that we really don't know who the main
  • characters really are and we learn and
  • see their true colors in this chapter.

SYMBOLISM

  • 1) The Drink containing Acid: This
  • symbolizes how Anthony Marston
  • had no idea and how none of the
  • guest had any idea that they all
  • shared something in common.

SYMBOLISM

  • 2)Anthony Marston's Convivtion:
  • Anthony's convicted of leaving natives
  • to die symbolizes "Mr.Owen" leaving
  • all of them to die on the island.

TONE

  • The author wants us to feel that
  • none of the characters are
  • comfortable with each other and
  • that none of them know anything
  • about each other.

IDIOMS

  • 1)"Got a bee in his bonnet" means
  • she has an idea that won't go away.
  • 2)"It iniquitous!" means that it is
  • a very wrong thing to do.

IDIOMS

  • 3)"The hooded reptilian eyes met
  • his." means that his eyes were sharp.
  • 4)"He barked." mean he spoke loudly.
  • 5)"His eyes were amused." means
  • that his eyes were wide and attentive.
