Rome's Location: the white land is the Ancient Roman Empire at it's largest point. It surrounds the Mediterranean Sea! Rome was part of Europe, Asia, and Africa's continents.

Modern Day Italy:  Rome is now a city in the boot shaped country of Italy

Today, Italy is located on the continent of Europe.  It is a peninsula!

Tiber River

  • The city of Rome is located on the Tiber River.
  • They used the river for trade and transportation.

Hills and Mountains

  • Italy has two mountain ranges. Rome had many hills, mountains, and valleys.
  • The soil was limited-rich on the mountains. The best soil was found in the valleys with rich soil.
  • Ancient Rome had many different types of trees

Living and Working in Ancient Rome's Empire

Empire is the land and people under control of a powerful nation

Human Characteristics

  • Romans produced different kinds of work.
  • Farmers--food such as grains, olives, and grape; animals such as cows, sheep, goats, and pigs
  • Builders--Roads, used to connect communities. Used for trading, travel, and government. Ships, used for trading.

  • Fishermen--fished in the Mediterranean and provided food for the community.
  • Potters--made pottery for communities to use. Traded pottery for goods from other lands.
  • Armies--Roman armies used metal from Spain and Britain to make weapons for their wars.

Home Life

  • Romans lived in apartments without kitchens or running water.
  • They bought meals already made and brought them home to eat. They carried water from the public fountains.
  • Wealthy Romans had large homes with running water and large gardens.

  • Most Roman children were home schooled. Boys apprenticed with their fathers and girls learned home making from their mothers.
  • Wealthy children were sent to school outside of the home.
