ANCIENT ROME

"THE ETERNAL CITY" 'ROMAN REPUBLIC'

QUICK FACTS

  • Founding of Rome goes back to the very early days of civilization.
  • Romans believed that their city was founded in the year 753 BC
  • Was governed by kings, but after only 7 kings, they ruled themselves
  • Had a council known as the 'senate' which ruled over them
  • The Roman Republic was a very successful government

SOCIAL STRUCTURE

  • Rome knew four classes of people; division was very important
  • Lowest class were the slaves; had no rights at all and were owned
  • Next class were the plebeians; free people who had little say at all
  • Second highest class were the equestrians; given horse if they were called to fight for Rome
  • Patricians; nobles, the highest class- real power in Rome lay with them.

Gender Roles

  • Women were not citizens of Rome
  • Roman men believed that all women were weak
  • Women were unable to direct her own activities
  • Rome did not regard women as equal to men before the law
  • Women could not vote or stand for office; had no formal role in public life

DID ROME LIVE OUT THE AMERICAN DREAM?

NO; MEN AND WOMEN WERE NOT TREATED EQUALLY. SLAVES HAD NO RIGHTS.
