Ancient India

Writing

  • As time went by India used many different types of writing systems.
  • The first Indian script was developed around 2600 B.C. in the Indus Valley.
  • India's writing is considered the oldest writing in the world.
  • The Vedas, Ramayana, and Mahabharata writing dates back to 5000 B.C.
  • The Indians used pictographs to write like the Egyptian Hieroglyphs.       

Time

  • People have been living in India for thousands of years.
  • Indians have built some of the greatest civilizations in the world.
  • For over two millennia India suffered bloody invasions back to back.
  • Over time Yoga was originated in India in the ancient times.
  • Ancient Indians used something referred to as an Egyptian Shadow Clock.

Geography

  • 50 or 60 million years ago India smashed into South Asia.
  • When India hit South Asia it formed the Himalaya and Hindu Kush mountains.
  • In the ancient times India was extended far north into modern day Pakistan.
  • In the earlier years of India there were far more rivers than now.
  • The most important of them was Sarawati, which can not be traced now. 

Kingdoms

  • Cities began to slowly grow in India, by 600 B.C. they had formed kingdoms.
  • These kingdoms were called Mahajanapadas.
  • Most kingdoms had a main city in the middle and that was their capital. 
  • New kingdoms were formed when a clan produced more than one King in a gener
  • Tax was collected by the officers appointed by the King.

Ancient Indians

  • Bhaskaracharya calculated the correct time to revolve around the sun.
  • Charaka created the first school of medicine known to mankind.
  • Gyandev, a poet saint, introduced the game of Snakes and Ladders.
  • Quadratic Equations were introduced to India by Sridharacharya.
  • The famous Indian Budhayana mathematician calculated the value of "PI".

Transportation

  • The Kings, Emperors, & Soldiers used elephants, horses, camels, & chariots.
  • Common men used something called bullock carts, horses, and boats.
  • The women, elderly, and disabled mainly used a manual lifted cart.
  • These carts that the women and the old used were called a "Palki".
  • Other modes of transportation in India was by using donkeys & buffalos.

Nuclear War

Scientist have proven that there was once a nuclear war in India around 2500 B.C. Some of the Indians think it is nothing more than a myth, but scientists have found radioactive material on some of the skeletal remains and evidence of where the bomb was dropped and left marks on the Earth.

Clothing

  • Cotton was the style of clothing in ancient India.
  • Traditionally women would wear Saris.
  • Apart from the cotton saris there were also silk saris.
  • A sari is a piece of cloth/silk that could be 5 to 9 feet in length.
  • Ancient Indian clothing was not stitched together.

Fun Facts

  • India got its name from the Indus River.
  • The game of chess was invented in India.
  • India founded algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. 
  • In 700 B.C. the world's first university was established in Takshila, India
  • Even 2,600 years ago surgery existed in India.
