First of all, what is Greece and where is it?

  • Greece is the birthplace of democracy
  • It is in Europe near the Mediterranean Sea

who were some of the famous greeks?

  • Alexander the Great
  • Odysseus
  • Homer 
  • Heracles
  • Jason

Alexander the Great

  • One of the greatest military geniuses in history and an organizer
  • Alexander the Great was born in 356 B.C in Pella, Macedon
  • His mother was Olympias, princess of Epirus

What did Alex the great do when he was a general

  • Alex assembled forces in Corinth that recognised him as leader
  • He invaded the Persian Empire, while at war in Thrace
  • He captured and demolished the city of Thebes as warning
At the age of 20, Alexander assembled forces in Greek Cities in Corinth that recognised him as their Leader. His Army mainly consisted of Macedonian soldiers and also some Greeks. He then invaded the Persian Empire, but whilst he was at war in Thrace, some Greek cities rebelled, which brought him back South. Whereupon he captured the city of Thebes and demolished it as a warning to other Greek cities of what would become of them if they tried to resist his rule.

  • He was a hero of Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey
  • Husband of Penelope and father of Telemachus
  • He was renowned for his brilliance, guile, and versatility
  • He took part in the Trojan War
Odysseus (/oʊˈdɪsiəs/ or /oʊˈdɪsjuːs/; Greek: Ὀδυσσεύς, [odysˈsews]), also known by the Roman name Ulysses (/juːˈlɪsiːz/; Latin: Ulyssēs, Ulixēs), was a legendary Greek king of Ithaca and a hero of Homer's epic poem the Odyssey. Odysseus also plays a key role in Homer's Iliad and other works in that same Epic Cycle.
Husband of Penelope, father of Telemachus, and son of Laërtes and Anticlea, Odysseus is renowned for his brilliance, guile, and versatility (polytropos), and is hence known by the epithet Odysseus the Cunning (mētis, or "cunning intelligence"). He is most famous for the ten eventful years he took to return home after the decade-long Trojan War and his famous Trojan Horse ploy to capture the city of Troy.

where did Odysseus go to get back to Ithaca

  • He traveled to the Cyclops Polyphemus' island 
  • He endured being entranced by the sirens

  • and avoided being eaten by two sea monsters

Who was Archimedes? What did he Do?

  • Born in 287 B.C, in Syracuse, Sicily
  • Son of Phidias, an astronomer
  • Schooled in Alexandria, Egypt on of the biggest cities of that time
  • He made many of the discoveries of modern science, like integral calculus
  • Archimedes was killed by a Roman soldier saying"Don't disturb my circles"

  • He was a famous Greek poet
  • He wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey, famous Greek epics
  • He died at Ios, Greece
  • His parents were Krithiida and Meonas

HERACLES

  • He was famous for his extraordinary strength, courage and masculinity 
  • He is son of Alcmene and Amphitryon(Zeus)
  • He served Eurystheus for 12 years and completed his 12 labours
  • His first wife was Megara, they had several children
  • But he killed Megara and the children in a frenzy caused by Hera
Heracles' first wife was Megara, with whom he had several children. However, Hera caused Heracles to lose his mind and kill his wife and children in a frenzy

What were the 12 labors

  • He had to kill the Nemean Lion that terrorized the hills around Nemea
  • He had to kill the Lernean Hydra, who attacked Lerna with poison
  • He slayed the Stymphalian Birds
  • He brought Cerberus to Eurystheus 
  • And many more

Jason

  • He voyaged to get the Golden Fleece
  • He avoided dying by the Crushing Wall by Hera's help
  • He was guided by Chiron and Hera
  • He got the Golden Fleece, which is one of the most difficult tasks ever
  • He was related to Posidion 

Daedalus (Clever Worker)

  • He was father of Icarus, who died by his recklessness
  • He was uncle of Perdix, who was killed by Daedalus
  • Possibly son of Athena 
  • Created the Labyrinth on Crete, in which the Minotaur was kept
Daedalus is first mentioned by Homer as the creator of a wide dancing-ground for Ariadne.[12] He also created the Labyrinth on Crete, in which the Minotaur (part man, part bull) was kept.

What did Daedalus Build?

  • He built the Labyrinth which the Minotaur was kept 
  • He built wings for Daedalus and Icarus to fly away
  • He invented carpentry
