THE ROLE OF MEN
- They had to teach their growing up boys their own trade and related to society at large
- Wealthy men worked either either in business or government.
- Men from the lower class spent their days with their wives working in the fields, preparing food making clothes and working as slaves for the rich.
- Boys learned a trade or craft from their fathers or a crafts person.
- They would work all day but they still had time to teach their younger sons how to behave as a male.
- Men would work toward growing crops, building, selling, buying things and if they can afford they would buy slaves.
- Their fathers taught their kids how to do business and trade.
- For business they would have a clear understanding of how to do it.
- Men held the majority of political offices And roles in the public sphere. Men ruled the political system.
- Male artists created most art and art was commissioned by the male classes from the higher rankings.
THE ROLE OF WOMEN
- Women could only become pharaoh in very special circumstances they were otherwise regarded as totally equally to men as far as the law was concerned.
- They could own property, borrow money, sign contracts, initiate divorce appear in court as a witness.
- They were also equally subject to whatever responsibilities normally accompanied those rights.
- Women in ancient Egypt were ahead of their time. They could not only rule the country but also had many of the same basic human rights as men.
- One of the first woman to hold the rank of pharaoh was Hatshepsut who began her rule in about 1,500b.c.e.
- Hatshepsut took care of her people and built temples to the gods as well as other public buildings.
- Egyptian custom dictated that a pharaoh who was considered a god could not marry a mortL.
- Pharaohs chose spouses from within the royal family. Her husband Thutmose was her half brother.
- Nerfertiti was another ancient Egyptian ruler.
- She married amenhotep iv, preached and supported monotheisem or the belief in only one God.
CULTURAL ACHIEVMENTS
- The created a calendar based on the farming season there were three seasons the flooding season the planting season and the harvest season.
- Each season was 3 months long. That added up to 360 days the ancient Egyptians noticed they needed a few more days to fit the seasons.
- They added 5 days holy days to thank gods. So thousands of years ago the ancient Egyptians invented a calendar with 365 days!
- They also learned how to make things out of papyrus. Papyrus is a plant that grows in the Nile river.
- It is used for many different things but it is super dangerous to harvest. In the process of hArvesting the papyrus the harvesters have to sing very loud and splash their paddles against the water to keep away the hippos, crocodiles, and snakes!
- The most important use for the papyrus was to make scrolls which was the first paper. For the first time ever they could travel with writing.
- After the Egyptians stopped building pyramids they started building temples for religious purposes. Some of the greatest temples ever built were the temples of Karnak.
- Writing was a very good achievement because one of the first writing systems in the world the Egyptians developed was hieroglyphics. They were first carved in stone or other hard materials. Later Egyptians learned how to make papyrus a long lasting paper like material scribes used them to write using brushes and ink. The writing used 600 symbols.
- One good achievement was art they painted on papyrus canvas pottery plaster and wood. The temple art was dedicated to the gods while tombs artwork were meant to be enjoyed during the afterlife. Subjects were historical events such as crowning of kings and founding of temples.
- The agricultural surplus enabled them to engage in many activities related not to immediate survival but to the afterlife
