GREAT PYRAMID AT GIZA, EGYPT

  • Location: Giza Egypt
  • Who Built: Pharaoh Khufu
  • Size: 455 ft. tall
  • When: 2550 BC

FACTS

  • It is made up of about 2.3 million blocks, each weighing 2.5 - 15 tons each.
  • It is the oldest of the three Giza pyramids.
  • It is the oldest and most intact of the 7 ancient wonders.

HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON

  • Location: Modern Iraq
  • Who built: Nebuchadnezzar
  • Size: Around 80 ft. tall
  • When: 605 BC

FACTS

  • According to accounts it was built to cheer up Nebuchadnezzar's homesick wife.
  • Some people are starting to question the existence of it.
  • Some archeologist believe the actual location was not in Babylon but 360 miles north of Nineval.

STATUE OF ZEUS AT OLYMPIA, GREECE

  • Location: Modern Greece
  • Who built: Phidias
  • Size: 43 ft. tall
  • When: Started 466 BC Opened 435 BC

FACTS

  • The statue of Zeus was made of wooden frame and then covered in ivory and gold plates.
  • In 170 BC the statue was damaged by an earthquake, but was repaired quickly
  • The size of the statue was so tall that if the statue stood up his head would go through the roof of the building.

TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS AT EPHESUS

  • Location: Ephesus (Turkey)
  • Who built Chersipron
  • Size 425 ft tall
  • When: 550 to 650 BC

FACTS

  • Temple of Artemis is also known as Temple of Diana.
  • The first temple was destroyed around the 7th century.
  • Reconstruction began right away it took around 10 years to rebuild.
  • Each time it got destroyed it became bigger and better.
  • Got destroyed 3 times by natural disasters such as flood and fire.

MAUSOLEUM AT HALICARNASSUS

  • Location: Modern Turkey
  • Who built: Pythius and Satyros
  • Size: 148 ft. tall
  • When: Between 353-350 BC

FACTS

  • It was built to be a tomb for the City King, Mausolus
  • When he died his queen (and sister) decided to have people build a great tomb in his honor
  • Was damaged by earthquake in 1300 A.D. then the Crusaders in 1522 A.D.

COLOSSUS OF RHODES

  • Location: Modern Greece
  • Who Built: Chares of Lindos
  • Size: 110 ft (without pedestal its 50 ft)
  • When: Between 292-280 BC

FACTS

  • The people of Rhodes built it after a victory at war.
  • Historians believe that the figure was semi-nude, with a cloak over its left arm and shoulder.
  • When it was finished it was dedicated with a poem.

POEM

  • To you, to sun, the people of Dorian Rhodes set up this this bronze statue reaching to Olympus, when they had pacified the waves of war and crowned their city with the spoils taken from the enemy. Not only over the seas but also on land did they kindle the lovely torch of freedom and independence. For to the descendants of Heracles belongs clomimion over sea and land.

LIGHTHOUSE AT ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT

  • Location:Alexandria, Egypt
  • Who built: Ptolemaic Kingdom
  • Size: 393-450 ft
  • When: started 280 BC opened 268 BC

FACTS

  • The city of Alexandria was named after Alexander the Great.
  • In today's time, it would cost 3 million dollars, but back then it costed 800 talents.
  • Inside of the lighthouse there were stairs leading to the beacon.
