Risk Factors
-a diet lacking in certain vitamins(eg. Iron, vitamin B12, and folate)
-intestinal disorders which affects absorption of nutrients.
-pregnancy
-chronic conditions(eg. Cancer, kidney failure, liver failure).
-family history of inherited anaemia.
-breastfeeding(baby takes mother's store of iron).
-menstruation, causes loss of red blood cells.
-being an athlete(excessive exercise causes iron loss via sweat).
-blood loss, via heavy periods, stomach and bowel problems, ulcers.
-damaged veins or bleeding piles(haemorrhoids)
-defective red blood cell production or red blood cell destruction.

Protective Factors
-making sure that certain food groups are consumed on a regular basis(including dairy foods, lean meats, nuts, legumes, fresh fruit and vegetables).
-if you are a vegetarian who doesn't eat dairy products then you should take vitamin and mineral supplements regularly.
-healthy eating: red meats, poultry, fish, eggs, dried beans, lentils, green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grain breads and cereals, tofu.
-foods high in iron include: lean meat, raisins, chicken, spinach, eggs, dried beans, molasses, iron-fortified cereals and breads, dried fruits, oysters, liver, prune-juice.
-have plenty of vitamin C in your diet which increases absorption of iron.
-avoid too much tea and coffee because they can interfere with iron absorption.

Personal Strategies
-Eat foods high in iron
-Eat and drink foods that help your body absorb iron, like orange juice, strawberries, broccoli, or other fruit and veggies that have Vitamin C.
-Don't drink coffee and tea with meals - this makes it harder for your body to absorb the iron that is in the food.
-Make sure you consume enough folic acid, Vitamin B12 and calcium.
-Talk to your doctor about taking iron pills, however do NOT take any without first talking to your doctor.

Health Care
-Access to free or minimal cost health care regardless of your Centrelink status, this includes consultation, diagnostic testing and where possible, pharmaceuticals and treatment.
-You have the right to absolute confidentiality.
-You have the right to take an active part in health care decisions and asking questions when not sure about what's happening to you.
-You have the right to speak up when you're not happy with the health care received.
-at approximately age 14 you can consent to simple health care treatment without involving a parent or guardian.
-You can have your own Medicare card when 15years old or younger if your parents consent. Medicare covers the cost of all public hospital clinics and sometimes it will cover treatment by health professionals, doctors and specialists.
