AMPHIBIANS

  • 7000 known species
  • Largest living amphibian was 1.8 m long (chinese giant salamander)
  • The smallest amphibian in the work was a frog at 7.7 mm long

THE 3 CLASES OF AMPHIBIANS

  • Gymnophiona(the caecilians)
  • Anura(the frogs and toads)
  • Urodela(the salamanders)

GYMNOPHIONA

  • Resemble earthworms or snakes
  • Live hidden in the ground/ live mostly in south and central America, Africa, and Asia
  • No limbs smooth skin
  • Swim like eels I'm water or loose mud

ANURA

  • Many have smooth moist skin
  • Can range anywhere from 9.8mm to 300mm in length
  • Move by leaping and can be very poisonous
  • Members of hylid subfamily phyllomedusinae have opposable digits and walk along branches

URODELA

  • They all posses tails, aquatic species use it to propel themselves
  • Adults lack a tympanum(external ear drum)
  • Legs for walking rather than jumping or hopping
  • Have teeth and are carnivorous

FACTS

  • Inhabit wide variety of habitats most living within terrestrial, fossorial, arboreal or freshwater ecosystems
  • They can breath through their skin
  • Young undergo metamorphosis from larva with gills to adult with lungs

REPROCUCTION

  • Reproduce sexual female lays gelatinous eggs
  • Male deposits clouds of sperm over them
