This was published in 1776.
An essay by Thomas Paine.
This urged the colonies to declare independence.
Many colonists were still reluctant to cut their tie with Britain.
Paine told these colonists that it was time to make the break.

A 1776 document.
Stating that 13 English colonies were a free and independent nation.
The main parts are natural rights, British wrongs, and independence.
Natural rights- rights that belong to all people from birth.

The British agreed to provide military aid.
France, Netherlands, and Spain provided loans to the United States.

WINTER AT VALLEY FORGE
Pennsylvania, 1777-1778, during the winter.
Washington's Continental army.
Soldiers shivered in damp, drafty huts, many slept on the ground.
Some soldiers stood guard wrapped in blankets, others had no shoes.
Soldiers suffered from frostbite and disease.

BENEDICT ARNOLD TURNS TRAITOR
Arnold captured and burned the capital city.
September, 1780.
Arnold secretly agreed to turn over West Point to the British.
Washington ordered Arnold to be hanged, but he was not captured.

A 1763 agreement between British and France.
This ended the French and India war, marked the end of French power.
Peace treaty between the United States and Britain, ratified in 1783.
Recognized the United States as an independent nation.

BATTLE OF BUNKER HILL
On June 16, 1775, first major battle of the Revolution.
Colonel William Prescott led the Americans.
William Howe Led the British.
The British won, they took Bunker Hill and Breeds Hill.
It proved the Americans could fight bravely, also the British would not be easy to defeat.

On January 2, 1777, battle in New Jersey.
George Washington led the Americans.
The Continental army won with George Washington.
General Charles Cornwallis led the Hessians.

The victories gave the Americans new hope.
Washington moved to Morristown, where the army would spend the winter.

The Americans won this battle.
Burgoyne led the redcoats.
France became an Allie of the United States.

Thomas Young set out with other Patriots to capture Kings Mountain.
Kings Mountain won.
The Americans victory showed that Britain's new strategy might not work.

Cornwallis led the British loyalist.
Washington trapped Cornwallis on the Yorktown peninsula.
