PRESENTATION OUTLINE

BATTLE OF BUNKER HILL

  • June 16, 1775
  • It proved that the Americans could fight bravely.
  • The Americans won but it showed that the British would not be easy to defeat.

COMMON SENSE

  • January 1776
  • Thomas Paine set out to change colonists attitudes toward Britain told colonists it was time to make the break.
  • The colonists begin to think the unthinkable—it was time to create a nation of their own.
  • It was important because the British would remain under the British rule

THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

  • July 4, 1776
  • people form governments in order to protect their natural rights and liberties
  • The committee John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Livingston, Roger Sherman, and Thomas Jefferson.
  • Announces that the colonies are the United States of America,

BATTLE OF LONG ISLAND

  • December 1776
  • The rest retreated to manhattan, the British pursued, to avoid capture Washington went north.
  • More 1,400 Americans were killed, wounded, or captured.

BATTLE OF TRENTON

  • Early on December 26, 1776
  • The Americans surprised the hessian troops and took most of them prisoner.
  • Hessian population at of Trenton at 8.am—1,408 men & 34 officers; hessian population at 9.am—0
  • The Americans won the war

BATTLE OF PRINCETON

  • January 2, 1777
  • Washington fooled Cornwallis by leaving fires burning & slipped behind British lines to attack
  • the British force that was monarch ins towards Princeton
  • The Americans won the war

BRANDYWINE & GERMANTOWN

  • July 1777
  • Howe captured Philadelphia, defeating the Americans
  • He retired to comfortable quarters in Philadelphia for the winter
  • Washington retreated to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania

FORT STANWIX

  • July 1777 ,
  • British armies under Burgoyne and Barry st. Ledger
  • Howe captured where he began his march on Philadelphia

BATTLE OF BENNINGTON

  • He sent troops into Vermont to find food and horses
  • The patriots attacked the redcoats, the wounded or captured nearly 1,000 British
  • Green mountain boys hurried into New York to help the American forces
  • October 1777

BATTLE OF SARATOGA

  • A major turning point in the war , ended a British threat to New England
  • Boosted American spirits when Washington's army was suffering defeats
  • Convinced France to become an ally of the U.s
  • The Americans won the war
  • October 17, 1777

FRANCE SIGNS A TREATY WITH THE U.S

  • February 1778
  • The continental congress had longed hoped for French aid
  • The congress wanted France to declare war on England
  • France became the First Nation to sign a treaty with the U.s
  • It recognized a new nation & agreed to provide military aid

WINTER OF VALLEY FORGE

  • Conditions at Valley forge were terrible.Soldiers shivered in damp drafty huts, many slept on the frozen ground, etc.
  • Patriots from around the nation sent help, some women collected food, medicine & warm clothes
  • The arrival of desperately needed supplies was followed by warmer weather
  • By the spring of 1778 the army was more hopeful

VINCENNES

  • February 1779
  • Clark plotted a surprise attack on the British fort at Vincennes
  • When Clark's small force reached the fort, the spread out through the woods to make their number appear greater
  • The British commander thought it was useless to fight that many Americans
  • He surrendered to the Americans

KINGS MOUNTAIN CAPTURED

  • The patriots captured kings mountain on October 7, 1780
  • Britain had decided to make the south the key to winning the war.
  • The American victory at kings mountain showed that Britain's new strategy might not work.

BENEDICT ARNOLD TURNS TRAITOR

  • September 1780, the General was angry because he felt he had not received enough credit for his victories and he needed money.
  • Arnold secretly agreed to turn over to British, the plot was uncovered by a patriot patrol. He then escaped to the British
  • Thomas Jefferson offered a sizable reward for his capture , Washington ordered Arnold to be hanged.
  • He was never captured

BATTLE OF COWPENS

  • January 1781, Morgan used a clever tactic to defeat the British
  • He divided his soldiers into a front line & a rear line, and retreated after 2 volleys
  • The British thought that they'd retreated and charged forward right into the second rank.
  • The Americans won the war

GUILFORD COURTHOUSE

  • Spring of 1781
  • Cornwallis abandoned his plan to take the Carolinas
  • He moved his troops north into Virginia
  • He plan to conquer Virginia and cut off the Americans supply routes to the south

BATTLE OF YORK TOWN

  • October 9, 1781, Cornwallis disregarded an order form to send part of his army to New York.
  • He retreated to Yorktown peninsula , Washington saw an opportunity to trap him
  • He could not get supplies , he could not escape by land or sea. A siege occurred
  • The British surrendered their weapons and marched between the victorious troops.

TREATY OF PARIS APPROVED

  • Paris 1782, congress sent Benjamin Franklin & John Adams to work out a treaty.
  • Britain was eager to end the war , Americans got most of what they wanted.
  • The British recognized the U.S. as an independent nation. It extended from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River.
  • April 15, 1783 congress ratified the treaty of Paris
