CULPER SPY RING

  • The Culper spy ring replaced 763 Words, names and places with numbers
  • This was used by the american spies to help communicate the locations of the British
  • Two members were Abraham Woodhull and Robert Townsend
  • Used Samuel Culper Sr. And Samuel Culper jr. As aliases.

THE CODING

  • The culper spy ring code was created and developed by Benjamin Tallmadge
  • Only a few copies of the code were made
  • It substituted different words by using numbers

THE DANGERS OF BEING A SPY

  • Spies that were caught were often punished
  • One American spy, Nathan Hale was hanged without a trial in New York City
  • In September of 1776

  • The culper spy ring achieved more than any other American or British
  • intelligence network during the war
  • Perhaps the greatest achievement of the Culper Spy Ring, was in 1780 when they
  • Uncovered British plans to ambush the newly arrived French amry in Rhode Island

INVISIBLE INK

  • During the Revolutionary war, invisible ink was used as a form of secret writing
  • Invisible ink was usually made out of ferrous sulfate and water
  • The secret writing was placed between the lines of regular letters
  • You could reveal inspvisible ink by applying heat or a chemical substance to the paper
