LEXINGTON AND CONCORD APRIL 19, 1775

  • British were raiding Concord
  • They wanted weapons and Sam Adams
  • British were met by militia in Lexington
  • "The shot heard aprind the world" was fired
  • The British won Lexington, but were ambushed and forced to retreat

BATTLE OF BUNKER HILL JUNE 17, 1775

  • Militia were stationed on Bray Hill
  • British came to seige the hill
  • British won because colonists lacked ammunition
  • Moral victory for colonists
  • Despite loss, many British were killed

INVASION OF NEW YORK JUNE-AUGUST 1776

  • British fleet arrived in New York harbor
  • British were controlled by general Howe
  • The battle ended with British gaining control of New York
  • Washington fled this battle, but Howe didn't follow

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE JULY 4, 1776

  • Continental congress met in Philadelphia
  • There was thougths of seceding from Great Britain
  • They were inside discussing for weeks
  • They finally agreed to secede
  • They wrote and sent the declaration to declare their independence

NATHANEAL GREENE AUGUST 9,1776

  • George Washingtons friend Greene was appointed to general of south militias
  • In the Battle of Brandywine Washington was holding position against British
  • Greene brought reinforcements
  • He held many other military positions

BATTLE OF TRENTON DEC. 26, 1776

  • British were stationed on Delaware river
  • They didn't think the colonists would fight on Christmas
  • Washington's men crossed river slowly to not alert the British
  • Colonists launched surprise attack in the morning of Dec. 26
  • Colonists won this battle

BATTLES OF SARATOGA JUNE14, 1777

  • British captured Fort Ticonderoga easily
  • The British then moved to Saratoga
  • The Americans won at Saratoga
  • The French became allies with the Americans after Saratoga

JOHN PAUL JONES' NAVAL CAMPAIGN APRIL 17, 1778

  • Jones was an admiral in the continental navy
  • He sailed to England to block ships
  • They got right along side smalls english ships and bombed them
  • He was sent to France to attack trade ships british waters

CLARK'S FRONTIER CAMPAIGN JULY, 1778

  • He and 175 men moved down the Ohio river
  • They first captured Fort Massac
  • They took Kaskaskia without resistance
  • He conquered most of the old north west
  • He got many native tribes to stop fighting with British

VALLEY FORGE - WINTER 1778-79

  • Washington and his troops were stationed at Valley Forge
  • They learned they only had rations for 8 days
  • Smallpox affected the troops greatly, they lost about 2,000 soldiers.
  • 6 months after an army left Valley Forge. They had changed from Rebel to mature army

SIEGE OF CHARLESTON MARCH 29, 1780

  • British were trying to capture Charleston
  • 92 colonists were killed, 148 wounded, 4650 were captured
  • The British were victorious
  • Only 576 colonists escaped this attack

BATTLE OF CAMDEN AUGUST 16, 1780

  • Lieutenant Charles Cornwallis led troops to South Carolina
  • They routed the Americans in the battle
  • Horatio Gates fled along with some of his troops
  • Nathaneal Greene replaced Gates after this battle
  • There was a second battle which thw British won

BATTLE OF YORKTOWN OCTOBER 19, 1781

  • French and Americans fought against British
  • Colonist general: Washington,British: Cornwallis, French: Rochambeau
  • Colonists defeated the British
