  • Selective Training and Service Act of 1940
  • 1948-1973 Peace time & period of conflict
  • December 1,1969 - lottery drawing
  • 1973- The draft ended &U.S. Converted to a volunteer military
  • 1980- President Carter resumed registration of young men

  • 18 years old must register for Selective Service
  • Service Board calls men 18-26 into service if needed
  • Vietnam War did the lottery drawing.

  • 1960's collage campus' started protest marches
  • Students for a Democratic Society (SDS)
  • Free Speech Movement(FMS)
  • Both protested what they thought was increasing power of the gov't

  • April 1965 20,000SDS marched in Washinton
  • November 1965 there were 30,000 protesters
  • 200,000 Men were drafted for the war

  • David J. Miller set his draft card on fire and sent to prison for 2 years
  • Robert La Porte set himself on fire in front of the UN in NYC
  • Alice Herz first activist in the U.S. to protest the war
  • Norman Morrison set himself on fire infront of the Pentagon

  • Soldiers were treated badly when they came home
  • Soldiers were shunned and spit on.
