11th Amendment

  • Citizens cannot sue states in federal courts. (revised 1795)

12th Amendment

  • 1. About choosing the President and Vice President.
  • 2. Revised electoral college.
  • 3. Electors cast a separate vote for president and vice president.
  • 4. Guarantees the President and Vice President from the same party. (ratified 1804

13th Amendment

  • Abolished slavery (ratified 1865)

  • Gives women the right to vote. (ratified 1920)

14th Amendment

  • Defines citizenship as all persons born/naturalized in U.S., includes "equal protection clause", and says no state can deny a person's rights without due process of law. (ratified 1868)

  • Declares the right to vote cannot be denied because of race. (ratified 1870)

  • Gives Congress the power to impose individual federal income tax (ratified 1870)

  • Provides that U.S. Senators be elected directly by the people. (ratified 1913)

18th Amendment

  • Prohibits the manufacture, sale, and shipment of alcoholic beverages started prohibition. (ratified 1919)

20th Amendment

  • A.K.A. "Lame Duck Amendment", states that the President and Vice President begin their new terms on January 20th (was March 4th); members of the Congress begin on January 3rd. (ratified 1933)

22nd Amendment

  • Limits the President to 2 terms (up to 10 years). (ratified 1951)
