WHAT IS THE 26TH AMENDMENT?

  • The 26th amendment states that you must be at least 18 to vote.
  • It was ratified from 21 to 18 in March 1971.

  • The amendment was passed by congress March 23, 1971.
  • It became part of the constitution in July of 1971.

WHY WAS THE 26TH AMENDMENT CREATED?

  • The 26th amendment was created because young activists
  • thought it was their right to vote and take part in political activities.
  • Many people became aware of the want for change when the slogan
  • "Old enough to fight, old enough to vote" became popular.
  • Soon enough, the voting age was changed from 21 to 18.

INTERESTING FACTS!

  • Tennessee was the 4th state to ratify the 26 amendment
  • This amendment was passed faster than any other amendment.
