Triple entente (allies)- France, Britain and Russia

Triple alliance (central powers)- Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy and the Ottoman Empire

The alliances were supposed to balance the power in the world. It was thought that no country would want to go to war with another who had allies protecting it....but that wasn't the case in WWI. The allies were a cause that led to the war.
