  • Born in Stratford-Upon-Avon
  • Baptized April 26, 1564 (birthday unknown)
  • Youngest of four sisters and three brothers
  • Son of John Shakespeare and Mary Arden

LATER LIFE

  • Married Anne Hathaway at age 18
  • Had three children
  • Between 1585-1592 he had a successful career
  • Jobs included: acting and writing
  • Also part owner of a theater company

SHAKESPEARE ENGLAND

  • In his time, no female actors
  • Acting was not an "honorable" job
  • Women had to be played by small boys
  • Some actors would get their lines the day of the play
  • Lines were whispered from behind the curtains

THE GLOBE THEATER

  • "Groundlings" were the cheapest ticket; they stood
  • Next cheapest seats were in the galleries
  • You could pay a penny more for a cushion
