Characteristics of Owls
Owls are active at night (nocturnal).
A group of owls is called a parliament.
There are around 200 different owl species.
Owls have large eyes and a flat face.
All owls have upright posture and forward-facing eyes that give them binocular vision, just like humans.

Habitats of Owls
Owls are found in all different habitats and there are different owl species found on all continents except Antarctica.
Owls live in a variety of habitats, including coniferous forests, mountains, deserts, and plains.
The snowy owl lives in the cold tundra of the north.
Many owls nest in tree cavities.
Others, including the snowy owl and short-eared owl, nest on the ground.
The burrowing owl lives in old mammal burrows.

Eating Habits of Owls
A barn owl can eat up to 1,000 mice each year, and many farmers try to attract barn owls to help control rodent populations in agricultural fields.
Owls generally have a hunting territory away from their daytime roost.
Owls are Birds of Prey, which means that they must kill other animals to survive.

Owls and their Offspring
After the four-week incubation process, the youngsters hatch -- usually any time between March and July.
Nesting for the species occurs underground in burrows.
Both of the parents work together to look after the little ones.
The chicks, immediately after birth, lack hearing and are entirely dependent on their parents.
