Characteristics of Owls

  • Owls are active at night (nocturnal).
  • A group of owls is called a parliament.
  • There are around 200 different owl species.
  • Owls have large eyes and a flat face.
  • All owls have upright posture and forward-facing eyes that give them binocular vision, just like humans.

Habitats of Owls

  • Owls are found in all different habitats and there are different owl species found on all continents except Antarctica.
  • Owls live in a variety of habitats, including coniferous forests, mountains, deserts, and plains.
  • The snowy owl lives in the cold tundra of the north.
  • Many owls nest in tree cavities.
  • Others, including the snowy owl and short-eared owl, nest on the ground.
  • The burrowing owl lives in old mammal burrows.

Eating Habits of Owls

  • A barn owl can eat up to 1,000 mice each year, and many farmers try to attract barn owls to help control rodent populations in agricultural fields.
  • Owls generally have a hunting territory away from their daytime roost.
  • Owls are Birds of Prey, which means that they must kill other animals to survive.

Owls and their Offspring

  • After the four-week incubation process, the youngsters hatch -- usually any time between March and July.
  • Nesting for the species occurs underground in burrows.
  • Both of the parents work together to look after the little ones.
  • The chicks, immediately after birth, lack hearing and are entirely dependent on their parents.
