FORCING THE FRENCH OUT OF NORTH AFRICA

  • In Africa, the French resisted decolonization.
  • It was a bloody war that began in 1954.
  • The French people expressed differing opinions on the Algerian conflict.

FRANCE IN AFRICA

  • Two million French people settled or were born in Algeria by the mid 1940s

WAR IN ALGERIA

  • The War began under the command of the FLN, the Nation Liberation Front.
  • Used guerrilla warfare tactics.
  • Algerians serving with the French had to kill fellow Algerians or be killed by them.
  • By the wars end in 1962, hundreds of thousands of Algerians had died.
