INTRODUCTION

  • Albinism is a recessive disorder that causes the lack of pigments.
  • It is a chromosomal disorder
  • There are four types of Albinism. Type 1,2&3, and ocular.
  • Type 1 is found on chromosome 11: type 2 is on chromosome 15.
  • Type 3 is found on chromosome 9; ocular is on the X chromosome.

PEDIGREE OF ALBINISM

CAUSE OF CONDITION

  • You must get the infected chromosome from both parents.
  • If it is Ocular and a female carries or has the disorder, there is a 50% chance a boy gets it.
  • The pedigree on the page before shows that it is indeed recessive.
  • Based on the pedigree, I can assume this is not Ocular albinism.
  • Both parents must carry the allele for a child to have the disorder.

COMMON CHARACTERISTICS AND SYMPTOMS

  • Albinism means the defect from producing the pigment melanin.
  • Melanin is the pigment that determines hair, eyes, and skin color.
  • Most living creatures with albinism have extremely pale skin.
  • Some types of albinism causes sensitivity to light and involuntary eye twitching.
  • Ocular albinism affects only the eyes, and the iris may look clear.

SPECIFIC GROUPS AFFECTED

  • Albinism can be found in all forms of life.
  • Ocular albinism is usually most present in males.
  • Type 3 is known to be in african americans more.
  • Type 3 may be more ethnic because it is mostly found in Africa.
  • Ocular albinism is x-linked, which males only have one of.

CURES AND TREATMENTS

  • There is no cure or treatment.
  • This disorder will not kill you.
  • People will need more sun protection than most.
  • Skin cancer is higher than most people as well.
  • It does not hinder your life expectancy.
