Alberico Gentili was born in San Ginesio, Italy on January 14th, 1552. He grew up to be a lawyer, jurist, and the professor of civil law at the University of Oxford for 21 years. He is often considered the father of international law

He wrote several books, which are often seen as one of the most essential for international legal doctrines, yet that also include theological and literary subjects.

In 1588 he published De jure belli commentatio prima (First Commentary on the Law of War), the first of a three-volume series. A complete revised edition appeared in 1598 as De jure belli libri tres (Three Books on the Law of War).
