2 Interesting Facts
1. The Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, were American aviation pioneers who created the first successful airplane, thanks in part to their invention of 3-axis control, enabling the pilot to effectively control the plane.
2. Planes have wings that feature an airfoil (aerofoil) shape, this is important as it helps overcome the effect of gravity pulling down on the plane.

Wright Brothers
Wilbur was born in Millville, Indiana on April 16, 1867. Orville was born in Dayton, Ohio on August 19, 1871.

Interesting Past
The Wright family was one of the oldest in Ohio; Wilbur and Orville's grandfather had helped settle Miami County. Because of their father's occupation, they traveled a good deal during their early childhood, but the Wrights eventually came to rest in Dayton, Ohio.

What Made Them Famous
Orville built and operated a printing press. The brothers published a weekly paper that Wilbur edited. Orville was a champion cyclist, and in 1892 they opened a bicycle shop, selling and renting the newly popular vehicle. Soon they began building bicycles themselves.

What Made Them Famous Continued
The Wright Brothers first performed a literature search to find out the state of aeronautical knowledge at their time. They wrote to the Smithsonian and obtained technical papers regarding aerodynamics. They read about the works of Cayley, and Langley, and the hang-gliding flights of Otto Lilienthal.

WRIGHT BROTHERS FACTS

  • The Wright Brothers didn't have an advanced way to turn right or left.
