AGNATHA ARE LAMPREYS AND HAGFISH

AGNATHA ARE JAWLWESS FISH

  • These are the earliest vertabrets
  • They do not have paired fins or a stomach
  • Most have a skeleton made of cartilage and
  • Seven or more paired gill pockets. They have a
  • Light sensitive peneal eye

THE LAMPREY

  • The lamprey looks like an eel but is a parasite
  • And sucks tissue and liquid from the fish it's attached to
  • Has rows of horny teeth. Found in temperate rivers
  • And costal seas. Can be from 5-40inches. They begin life as
  • As a freshwater larvae. There are 50 species known.

THE HAGFISH

  • Known as slime fish. Is eel like and pinkish in color
  • Has glands along its sides that produce slime. As a
  • Defense mechanism it can curl itself into knots. It
  • Is almost completely blind but has a wonder since of touch
  • And smell. Has a tongue like projection that comes out of its mouth
