PRESENTATION OUTLINE

BERLIN CONFERENCE

  • Lasted from 1884-1885
  • To settle land disputes with European nations about Africa
  • All European nations,the Ottoman Empire and the US attended
  • At the time of the conference, 80% of Africa remained under traditional and local control

EUROPEAN IMPERALISM

  • Before 1880 only 10% was control by European countries
  • By 1900 only Ethiopia and Liberia were independent
  • It was motivated by 3 main factor economic,political and social
  • Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, and Spain were competing for power

IMPERIALISTIC METHODS

  • The British ruled indirectly while the French ruled directly
  • The French used the assimilation policy
  • The colonial Africans had little education to keep them from rebelling
  • French industries we dependent on raw material from there colonies

END OF COLONIALISM (HOW)

  • Some European nations gave them their independence
  • Some got there independence by war
  • In the 1940s and 50s mass based political parties helped
  • Libya (1951) and Egypt (1952) were the 1st countries to gain there independence

LASTING EFFECTS

  • Conflicts and civil wars happened
  • Conflicts of ethnic groups happened
  • When the Europeans left there was a power vacuum in many areas
  • Many countries still have strong ties to there colonial mother countries
