IMPERIALISM AND COLONISM

BERLIN CONFERENCE

  • Held in 1884-1885
  • Was to lay down rules for dividing Africa
  • No African ruler was invited to it
  • Divided Africa without regard to ethnic and linguistic groups

EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM

  • Ethiopia warded off any colonization from Europe, allowing freedom
  • The king of Belgium wanted the Congo region in Africa
  • Portugal established São Tomé off the coast of Gabon
  • Most of central Africa was untouched until Belgium and France

IMPERIALISTIC METHODS

  • Divided most lands in Berlin conference
  • Took land by force by the new tech that massacred Africans
  • Used natives to help mine for new minerals
  • Sometimes ruled through already established kingdoms

END OF COLONISM

  • Many rebellions took place and nations gained independance
  • After WWll many natives were given independance
  • Europe needed to regroup after the war, giving up control
  • The colonies, sometimes threw countries in anarchy

LASTING EFFECTS

  • Colonial boundaries wee translated into country borders
  • Civil war in Sudan because of the different groups joined by the borders
  • Genocide in Rwanda when one group hated the other that were once joined by borders
  • Economies struggled because Of the loss of mother countries
