Before the wars

  • Born on April 20, 1889 in Australia
  • Only 1 sibling survived childhood out of 4 
  • had 2 step-siblings
  • his father died when he was 13
  • his mother died soon after

Before the war

  • He stayed in a homeless shelter for 7 years
  • This is thought to be when he started his anti-Semitism

world war I

  • volunteered in the German army when WWI started
  • He was accepted in August, 1914, even though he was an Austrian Citizen
  • awarded an iron cross badge and the black wound badge 
  • got 2 major injuries
  • was angered that Germany surrendered

World War I

  • Believed that the German army was betrayed by civilian leaders
  • He thought that the Treaty of Versailles was degrading
  • After WWI, he returned to Munich to serve as an intelligence officer
  • adopted many of the anti-Semitic ideas while monitoring the DAP
  • DAP = German Workers’ Party

Politics

  • Became 55th member of a political party (1955)
  • The party was called the National Socialist Worker's Party
  • He soon became the party's leader
  • established the party's symbol 
  • Gave public speeches to gain support for the party

Politics

  • Hitler replaced Drexler as NSDAP party chairman in 1921
  • Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei = NSDAP

GOvernment

  • Tried to take over the government in 1923
  • tried to do this through a putsch (it failed)
  • this was later called the Beer Hall Putsch
  • Hitler went to prison for 5 years because of this
  • During this time, he wrote Mein Kampf ("My Struggle")

Regaining power

  • Hitler was released after only 9 months
  • granted german citizenship in 1932
  • became chancellor on Jan 30, 1932 
  • Ran against Paul von Hindenburg
  • Formed a de facto legal dictatorship

Regaining power

  • Basic rights were suspended
  • Hitler's Nazi party was the only legal party in Germany
  • Military opposition was punished 
  • Demands of more power from the SA led to the night of long knives
  • In August,1934, He became head of state/head of government

  • Germany withdrew from the League of Nations
  • A massive expansion of Germany's army was announced
  • This broke the treaty of Versailles 
  • social reform measures were put in place
  • Nazis were responsible for 11 mil - 14 mil deaths from 1939 to 1945

Treaty of Versailles

  • The treaty of Versailles ended WWI
  • other countries allowed Hitler to expand the army
  • by doing this, he was breaking the treaty

Holocaust

  • Deaths took place in concentration camps
  • Mass executions were used 
  • People were killed in shootings and with poisonous gas

World War ii

  • Nazi German attack Poland, starting WWII 
  • This attack was on September 1, 1939
  • Britain/France declared war on Germany
  • Invaded Scandinavia 
  • Germany deteriorated over time

Last years of Hitler's Life

  • On July 20, 1945, Hitler was almost assassinated
  • On April 29, 1945, Hitler married Eva Braun 
  • The following day they committed suicide together
  • Hitler supposedly used a pistol/cyanide capsuls to commit suicide
