DIGITAL LEARNING

IF THE LEADERS DON'T GET IT, IT'S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. SCOTT MCLEOD
In order to see transformational changes in learning through technology resources, school leaders need to understand and support it.

You're in good hands with me as your presenter today. I have a certificate from 6th grade in the area of "computeronics." :)

If I read my slides to you, it's OK because there is very little text on each slide.

I turned down a presenter stipend for this workshop. I believe in the content and enjoy working with other educators, especially administrators, to help increase digital literacy.

It's not the devices at the end of the wires that's important, it's the people at the end of those wires.

ADULT LEARNING THEORY

Knowles and Galbraith
During this workshop, let's talk about how adults learn best. You are different than 4th graders and I recognize that.

ADULTS NEED TO KNOW WHY.

We learn best when we know why we need to learn something and how this new skill/knowledge will help us.

ADULTS NEED TO LEARN BY DOING.

I learned to fly fish by watching a few YouTube videos and then practicing on a stream. I didn't read three books, take a test, and then wait for my certification in the mail.

ADULTS ARE PROBLEM-SOLVERS.

We will have problems in the session today. Some app won't work right, the internet connection will get hinky, etc. That's OK. We'll work together to figure it out.

ADULTS LEARN BEST WHEN IMMEDIATELY USING WHAT THEY LEARN.

Were you patient when you first got your driver's license? No. You wanted to get out there and drive. We'll learn some skills and then put them to use right away.

THERE WILL BE A VARIETY OF SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE AMONG ADULT LEARNERS.

Someone in here knows the most and someone knows the least. That will vary from task to task we try today. We'll work together to ask and answer good questions. It is your responsibility as an adult learner to ask the questions that you have.

DISTRIBUTED COGNITION

Smartest person in the room is the room.
David Weinberger's book "Too big to know"

Our collective knowledge is very important to helping solve problems and answer questions.

We will make mistakes.

Mistakes will happen and that is OK. We need not be afraid to fail because we learn a lot from these times.

What's the worst that can happen? This isn't eye surgery.

Having our little comfort zone is OK. We can stay there, but we just need to visit "where the magic happens" on occasion.

Gilligan Syndrome - feeling stuck because you have very few people to turn to for advice and help.

Sometimes we have "dumb" questions that we don't want to ask our colleagues and supervisors. It's good to develop your PLN to ask those questions to those people.
