Adjectives in english

  • Positive: Red, happy, good
  • Comparative: redder, happier, better
  • Superlative: reddest, happiest, best
  • *Adjectives are used to describe a noun*

Regular latin comparison of adjectives

  • Find the stem by removing the gen. sing. ending of the adj.
  • Ex: molestus, a, um - gen. sing is molesti, molestae, molesti 
  • Stem: molest-
  • For 3rd declension adjectives, you do the same
  • Ex: brevis, is, e - gen. sing is brevis Stem: brevi- 

forming THE ADJECTIVES

  • Use stem and endings that correspond to it
  • Stem + - IOR/IUS + 3rd declension endings = Comparative Form
  • Stem + -ISSIMUS = Superlative Form
  • Ex: laetior, laetius = happier 
  • Ex: laetissimus, a, um = happiest

Brevis, is, e (Masc. and Fem)

  • N   brevior, breviores
  • G   brevioris, breviorum
  • D   breviori, brevioribus
  • Acc. breviorem, breviores
  • Abl. breviore, brevioribus

Brevis, IS, E Neuter

  • N  brevius, breviora
  • G brevioris, breviorum
  • D   breviori, brevioribus
  • Acc. brevius, breviora
  • Abl. breviore, brevioribus

brevis, is, e superlative

  • N  brevissiumum, brevissima
  • G  brevissimi, brevissimorum
  • D  brevissimo, brevissimis
  • Acc. brevissimum, brevissima
  • Abl. brevissimo, brevissimis

excpetions!

  • if the positive form in the masc. nom. sing ends in -er
  • Add r and add imus, a um (plucher -> pulcherrimus)
  • if positive form ends in -lis,
  • add an i and add imus, a um (facilis -> facillimus)
  • There are also some irregulars as well

Comparative adverbs

  • Take neuter acc/nom. of the comp. adjective
  • adj: pulchrior, pulchrius -> adv: pulchrius
  • Translation: beautifully

Superlative adverbs

  • Same form as superlative adj. in masc. nom. singular
  • Except change the -us to -e
  • pulcherrimus -> pulcherrime
  • Translation: Most beautifully
