Adding/SUBTRACTING LIKE POLYNOMIALS

First, what does the "like" part mean?

Let's look at an example...

But can you combine five apples and six oranges?

Five apples plus six apples is 11 apples.

In our case, let's say you can't. You can't combine apples and oranges, ok?

In the same way, 5x plus 6x is 11x.

But 5x plus 6x^2 (squared) is just 5x plus 6x^2.

They can't be combined because they're not "like".

THEY'RE NOT LIKE TERMS

Now what are polynomials?

Polynomials come from "poly" meaning many and nomial meaning terms.

So polynomials are "many terms"

(5x plus 6x^2) plus (7x plus 2x^2)

Now let's add the like polynomials!

Place the like terms together.

Then add the like terms.

5x plus 7x equals 12x

6x^2 plus 2x^2 equals 8x^2

The answer is...

8x^2 plus 12x

Another way to solve is the column method.

Line up all the like polynomials.

  • 7x plus 3x^2 plus 3
  • 3 plus 4x^2 plus 8x
  • NOW LINE IT UP
  • 3X^2 PLUS 7X PLUS 3
  • 4X^2 PLUS 8X PLUS 3

nOW IT'S EASIER TO ADD THE LIKE POLYNOMIALS.

The answer is 7x^2 plus 15x plus 6

The same rules apply to subtracting like polynomials.

(7x^2 plus 3x minus 2) minus (3x^2 plus 4x minus 3)

Would anybody like to solve???

Did you distribute the negative?

You better have distributed the negative...

The answer is...

4x^2 minus x plus 1

Now here are some practice problems for 3 volunteers.

(3x^2 plus 7x minus 4) plus (5x^2 plus 2x-1)

You can solve it on the board

(3x^3 plus 5x minus 2) plus (4 minus 2x^3 plus 7)

(12x^2 minus 4x^3 plus 2) minus

(6 plus 3x^3 plus 2x)

LET US CHECK THEIR WORK TOGETHER

that was easy, right?
