PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Genetic Changes:
When there is a constant environmental issue, humans adapt to the issue through evolution

Humans are naturally adapted to lowland environments. When people from the general lowlands go to altitudes above 8,200 ft, they experience mountain sickness, caused by severe lack of oxygen.

Tibetans live at an elevation of 11,500 - 14,000 ft above sea level on the Himalayan Mountain. The Tibetans do not experience mountain sickness. The Tibetans have changed genetically. They inhale more air with each breath and breathe more rapidly; they have larger lung volumes and increased blood flow, this is from the EPAS 1 gene. Some mutations of EPAS 1 are associated with increased hypertension and stroke in low altitudes. The Andean and Ethiopian highlanders have also experienced these genetic changes.

Developmental Adjustments:
We can be physically molded by our environment during the growing process

When there is a prolonged shortage of food, in a famine situation, as a response woman will develop marasmus, causing them to not be able to have children.

ACCLIMATIZATION

EARTHQUAKES, FLOODS, CYCLONES, VOLCANOES, TSUNAMIS, TORNADOS

A form of adjustment to environmental stresses. Humans adapt to natural disasters by planning and preparing. Those living in areas prone to natural disasters, practice preparedness, have an evacuation plan, and know how to keep themselves safe indoors and outdoors

Cultural or Technological Advances
Over the last half million years, we invented technological aids that allowed us to occupy new environments without having to first evolve biologically to them

HOUSES, CLOTHING,AND FIRE

PERMITTED US TO LIVE IN THE WORST OF ENVIRONMENTS
