ALIEN & SEDITION ACTS (ADAMS)

• Alien acts raised residence requirement for us citizenship from 5 yrs to 14 yrs
• Allowed president to deport or jail any alien considered undesirable
• Sedation acts set fines and jail terms for anyone messing with the gov.

ALIEN & SEDITION ACTS (JEFFERSON)

• Jefferson saw the Acts as a misuse of power
• Wrote resolutions to the states and was approved by Kentucky
• The Kentucky Resolutions asserted the principle of nullification
• States had the right to nullify any act of Congress that deemed unconstitutional
• The Acts were violations of the First Amendment rights

MIDNIGHT JUDGES (ADAMS)

• Signed into the law of judiciary act of 1801
• Midnight judges was selected by adams who signed appointments up untill midnight on his last day of office

MIDNIGHT JUDGES (JEFFERSON)

• Did not pose a political threat

XYZ AFFAIR (ADAMS)

• He got 71 votes, became president
• Democratic republicans convinced washington to not go into another term
• Adams sent low level officials (xyz)
• Didnt want to start war with french
• French thought the Jay Treaty was a violation , so they wanted to start a war

XYZ AFFAIR (JEFFERSON)

• got 68 votes
• Became Vice President
• He strongly believed in the Democratic Republic laws
• Sectionalism happened, southern voted for Jeffereson ,Northern voted for Adams
