The article “staking self worth on the pursuit of money has negative psychological consequences” written by Bert Gambini explains how many individuals base their self esteem by their financial success. In the article Gambini discusses how the pursuit of money has many risks when it is used to boost self esteem.

Money is an object to where it is never enough. There are two main reasons as to why people pursuit money. The first being that individuals base their self esteem on their financial earnings. They believe that by having money they are better than those who do not. “Our society values wealth as a model of how one should be treated in the world,”(4) States Gambini. More money= more respect. He discusses how many focus on financial status rather than “self strengths” Secondly, many try to pursuit money in fear that they will financially fail in the future. This creates anxiety and stress in individuals. “This demonstrates that just thinking about a financial problem generates a lot of stress and negative emotions of these individuals,”(Gambini 9).


This relates to the novel by showing how the characters such as Lord Mark and Kate are trying to pursuit money from their so called friend Milly. Lord Mark tries all he can to marry Milly just for her money, and that only. He partially focuses on her beauty but his main focus is her money. Kate on the other hand is trying her hardest get her hands on Milly’s money all for herself. She betrays Milly and has her thinking they are close friends when in reality Kate is just as focused on the money than Lord Mark.
