How can societal expectations negatively affect the insecurities of women?

In the article, “Why even successful women feel insecure about their looks,” Dr. Sharpe, from the institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London, explains how many side affects stem from self insecurities. ‘Self Hate’ is a common phrase that is mentioned when the topic of insecurities is mentioned. It can mean to dislike your own looks, body, etc.

Women looking in the mirror:

In our world today, women feel that they need to live up to an expectation. They feel that they need to look a certain way to feel accepted. The article states, “It can start when vulnerable young people compare their appearance to others....” Women tend to compare themselves to awe-inspiring celebrities whom are considered to be “perfect.” A bubble of self consciousness is formed because of this.

Thoughts that stem from insecurities:

The common question that is thought of when women may feel insecure, ‘Am I good enough for society?’ Ultimately, low self esteem can create a negative outlook on an individual female’s self as said in the article. “...and this can then trigger negative feelings about the way they look.”

Stress/Depression Symptoms:

With the overwhelming comparisons between women in our world, depression can be formed because of major insecurities. Text states, “This distress can be manifested in lots of different ways but research shows that it can put people at risk of depression...” This proves that because of our toxic societal exploitation’s, women’s health can be affected devastatingly.

Body Insecurities:

The common insecurities of women are low body self esteem. Many insecure women are prone to feel that their bodies are not accepted. Afraid of judgement, women may look down on themselves and their bodies as our society exploits women who may have “perfect” bodies. Article states, “...this is combined with low-self esteem, and insecurities then body dissatisfaction can follow...”

Ending Relation to the Novel:

Insecure women ultimately ties in with the novel, The Hunger Games, as Katniss Everdeen faces societal expectations. Relating to the main question. Katniss faces the judgements society that expect her to be a perfect hero. Katniss despises this but also feels pressured to look a certain way for the world around.
