The purpose of this course is to enhance the information literacy skills of college students. The objectives covered in this course are essential to academic success. The purpose of this training program is to enhance the information literacy skills needed for performing academic, scholarly research in college.
The target audience for this training course will be any student enrolled in SPH courses at Jefferson State Community College. This audience includes diverse learners from diverse backgrounds including age, sex, and ethnicity. The average age of these students is (22); the age range is 18-45. All have at least a high school diploma or a GED. Students are male and female, from diverse ethnic backgrounds. English is the first language for the majority of students.
Define what is meant by scholarly research in college.
Identify various information resource types (news articles, blogs, magazine articles, e-books).
Identify the components of a scholarly research article.
Perform online searching using library databases.
Conduct search of all resources at once (Ebsco-Single Search) for general topics.
Use subject specific databases: Opposing Viewpoints, Points of View Reference Center).
Locate and create citations for information resources.
List essential components of a citation (author, date, journal name, title).
Recognize various citation style formats (MLA, APA Chicago, etc.).
Identify and locate scholarly research via the internet (Google Search).
Perform evaluation of resources (Currency, Reliability, Authority, and Purpose).
