Reservation Location

  • The Abenaki live in two reservations in Quebec, Canada; the Abenaki also live scattered throughout New England.

Housing

  • Lived in small birchbark buildings called wigwams or lodges
  • cloth was also used in addition to the birchbark used to build the shelters

  • Men- mainly hunters and warriors
  • Women- mainly cared for the children,cooked, and farmed
  • Gender Neutral Activities- story telling
  • Dogs were considered to be an important part of the family for the people of the Abenaki tribe

  • Gluskabe: The god who protected the people of the Abenaki tribe and tought them the art of civilization
  • First Woman: The first woman ever made; created by Gichi Niwaskw and Gluskabe

The Major God (Gichi Niwaskw)

  • This means "Great Spirit" in the Abenaki language. Gichi Niwaskw is the the equivelent of the Christian god.
  • Never personified by folk lore.

Interesting Info

  • Abenaki means "people of the dawn" or "easterners"
  • Back then ,only a man could be cheif. Now, women can be cheifs too
  • Before the Wabenaki Confederacy was formed, the tribes fought amongst each other quite often
