PRESENTATION OUTLINE

A- ACTION VERBS

  • Action verbs are anything you can get up and do.
  • example- Victoria runs the race, and wins.

B- BECAUSE WALTER MITTY DIDN'T ENJOY REALITY...

  • Walter Mitty always daydreamed
  • Always wished to be a hero

C- COLLECTIVE NOUNS

  • A group of something
  • examples- a team, group, class

D- DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS

  • To show; to indicate; to point to
  • Near in distance or time (this, these)
  • Far in distance or time (that, those)
  • Example-
  • THIS tastes good.

E- ELEMENTS IN THE PLOT LINE

  • 1. Exposition
  • 2. Rising action
  • 3. Climax
  • 4. Falling action
  • 5. Resolution

F- FORESHADOWING

  • The author hints at what is yet to come
  • Hints at possible outcome
  • Example- A pre-scence will maybe hint at the next

G- GRIMES BUILDING

  • The Grimes Building was haunted.
  • Nobody was allowed in after 5.
  • There was said to be ghosts and spirits.

HELPING VERBS

  • Helps the main verb to make a verb phrase.
  • Example-
  • The plumber SHOULD HAVE been here by now.

I- IRONY

  • Contradiction between appearance and reality
  • Difference between what is expected and what happens.
  • A surprise ending
  • Example-
  • When it rains on your wedding day.

J- JIM BUYS DELLA A GIFT

  • In The Gift of the Magi, Jim buys Della combs
  • Della buys Jim a new watch, with money from her hair

K- KINDS OF NOUNS

  • Common nouns
  • Proper nouns
  • Concrete nouns
  • Abstract nouns
  • Compound nouns

L- LINKING VERBS

  • Join or link subject of sentence with words that identify it.
  • If the word follows the verb identifying the subject, it's a linking verb.
  • Example-
  • His face TURNED red.

M- MAKE PREDICTIONS

  • Taking clues and guessing what will happen next.
  • Example-
  • If the runner trains hard for the marathon, he will do well.

N- NARRATIVE

  • A narrative is nonfiction, it includes:
  • A narrator
  • Characters
  • The characters are the ones who drive the plot.

O- OTHER VERBS

  • Linking verbs
  • Action verbs
  • Helping verbs

P- PRONOUNS

  • Take place of a noun
  • Reduces repetition
  • Example- personal and possessive pronouns
  • Personal: Sam is my friend. > She is my friend.
  • Possessive: Sam's hat is the best. > His hat is the best.

R- REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS

  • When referring back to subject
  • Mostly ends in "self" or "selves"
  • Example- myself, ourselves
  • I gave myself an A+

S- SUBJECT OF A SENTENCE

  • Who or what is "doing" the verb
  • Can be more than one in a sentence
  • Not always in the beginning
  • Always nouns or pronouns
  • Example- The DOG is sleeping.

T- THE WASHWOMAN

  • The Washwoman is a short narrative
  • Shows a good theme
  • The washwoman is a very hard-working woman
  • Puts her job before almost everything

W- WALTER MITTY'S WIFE

  • Walter Mitty's wife is very bossy
  • Orders around Walter to do errands
  • Expects a lot from him

Y- YESTERDAY IS AN ADVERB

  • Adverbs modify or tell more about
  • Most end in -ly
  • Example- hopefully, extraordinarily
  • Mollie is extraordinarily bright.

V- VERBS

  • Express action or state of being
  • Some actions verbs you can see
  • Some you can not see
  • Example- love, hope
