AUSCHWITZ CONCENTRATION CAMP

  • Auschwitz was a concentration camp where Elie Stayed. It is said to have been one of the harshest camps.Around 1.1 million people were killed in this camp and it is now a museum.

BLOCKALTESTE

  • A Blockaltaste was a block leader in the concentration camp.Every block had a Blockaltaste. It was usually a inmate.

CREMATORY

  • The crematory was used to burn people. They killed the old, sick and babies. In the book Elie says they were throwing babies .Elie wrote in "Night" that on his first night in the camp he saw two burning pits, one for children and one for adults, where Jews were being burned alive.

DISEASES

  • Diseases were easily spread because they lacked hygiene. Inmates were barely fed which lowered there immune system. Because People had weak immune systems , it made small diseases a threat.

EXTERMINATION

  • The Nazi' wanted to annihilate Jews. Adolf Hitler blamed the Jews for the lose of WWI. Jews were put into concentration camps to be worked to death. If you could not work you would get put in the crematorium or get shot.

FLAMES

  • On the way to the concentration camp there's a lady screaming "Flames!" in the train. People freak out but don't see nothing. She keeps screaming "Flames" but eventually nobody believes her and they beat her to keep her quiet .When they finally approach the camp she starts screaming "Flames!" and everybody looks out the window and sees them. These flames were coming from the crematorium.

GOD

  • Elie stopped believing in God. He said if there was really a god he would save them all. This is a big factor in how Elie sees the problems he faces. When inmates "celebrated" Yom Kippur, Elie decide his life is more important than fasting for Salvation.

HOLOCAUST

  • The holocaust was a genocide in which Adolf Hitler killed about six million Jews.It lasted from 1941 to 1946. Jews were gathered up into camps and executed or put in sweat shops.

ISOLATION

  • Jews had to wear a star in there clothes so they could be easily identified. They star was used so they could be easily gathered and isolated from the rest of the world. When the Jews were gathered they were put into other people's homes. When they sent them to the camps they were with other Jews and prisoners from the war.

JEWS

  • Jews are people that believe in Judaism. Jews are the "race" Hitler wanted to exterminate. He blamed them for the lose of WW1. Most Jews were captured and sent into camps were they would work or be executed.

KAPO

  • A Kapo is a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp. Kapos were given authority by an SS Guard.He was assigned to supervise the force labor.

LABOR

  • Jews were put to work if they were healthy and young. Women and kids were usually killed. The men worked in sweatshop.

MANACLES

  • Manacles are handcuffs or chains. Jews were imprisoned and put into blocks with other Jews.

NUMBERS

  • When Elie first arrived to the camp they tattooed a number in his arm. This number was used for roll call. Another reason why I chose numbers is because a lot of Jews were killed. About 6 million Jew were killed during the holocaust

ODIUM

  • There is various forms of odium during the book and this time period. One example is when Elie expressed his hatred towards God when he says if you really existed you would save us all. Another example is how Hitler hated Jews and he blamed them for many things.

POLAND

  • Poland is one of the places the holocaust took pace in. It was the last place the Germans-occupied. It was used for the most lethal phase of the Nazi "Final solution". Around 3 million Polish Jews died.

QUATERS

  • Jews were put into quarters also known as blocks. This is were the slept. It was like a giant cell. Jews slept close to one another because it was very crowded. If the person you slept with got sick there was a big chance you did too.

ROSH HASHANAH

  • Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Years festival. It's a two day celebration.Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the year is explained by it being the traditional anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve.

SS GUARDS

  • SS stands for Schuzstaffel. In order to control Germany, Hitler needed the support of a well-organised Nazi party machine. The SS were the instruments that Hitler used from its establishment in 1925, by 1933 the SS had become a ruthless state with a state, whose members were fanatically loyal to Adolf Hitler.

TORAH

  • The Torah is the holy book for Judaism. Jews are monotheistic (believe in one God). The Torah is made up of 5 books.

UNTERMANSCHEN

  • Germans used this word to refer to the Jews. It means "sub-humans". They also used it towards groups that they thought were "undesirable"

VERSAILLES TREATY

  • This was a peace treaty that ended World War 1. This treaty created many issues and bitterness I between Europe and other countries. It left Germans feeling resentment. Hitler would then rise to power and start World war 2.

WARSAW GETTHO

  • It was the Largest ghetto in Poland. It covered 100 square blocks where around 500,000 Jews were contained. They were there from 1939 until May of 1943.

YOM KIPPUR

  • Yom Kippur is Adam celebrated by the Jews. It's is also know as the Day of Atonement. On this day Jews repent and fast.
