A - Allah
The Islamic name for God

B - Baghdad
The capital city of the Muslim Empire took 100,000 architects, workers, and craftspeople four years to build.

C - City of the Prophet
The City of the Prophet is Madina. Yathrib pilgrims journeyed to Makkah and converted to Islam. They then asked Muhammad to move to Yathrib to create peace with fighting tribes. This journey was known as the hijrah.

D-Declaration of Faith
The first pillar which is when a Muslim says that he believes there is only one God, and Muhammad was his messenger.

E-Eid al-Fitr
A celebration, after a month of fasting in the ninth month. People dress in new clothes, decorate their homes, and prepare special meals.

F-Five Pillars
The Five Pillars are declaration of faith, prayer, charity, fasting, and making pilgrimages to Makkah.

G-Gabriel
Gabriel, the angel, told Muhammad that he was the messenger of God.

H-Hajj
Hajj is the fifth pillar which is making a pilgrimage to Makkah. Millions of Muslim people gather together at Makkah to worship and pray.

I-Islam
A religion founded by Muhammad that is very popular in the Middle-East.

J-Jihad
The idea of Muslim's spiritual and physical difficulties to try to get closer to God, it also means "to strive."

K-Ka' bah
The Ka' bah is a box shaped temple in Makkah. It was built by Abraham years before Muhammad's birth. It was used to house hundreds of statues of gods because most Arabs were polytheistic in Muhammad's time.

L-Last Sermon
Muhammad gave his Last Sermon in his home town of Makkah and reminded Muslims to treat each other with respect and to be loyal to their community.

M-Muhammad
He is the founder of the Islamic religion.

N-Night Journey
Muslims believe that Muhammed was taken to Jerusalem to pray with Moses, Abraham, and Jesus. Then He was taken through the seven levels of heaven and met God on a winged horse.

O-Ottoman Turks
A Muslim empire that let their subjects to have religious freedom in their own communities called millets and most famous for capturing the Byzantine Empire.

P-People of the Book
Muslims thought that Jews and Christians were "People of the Book" because they believed in one God like the Muslims.

Q-Qur' an
The Qur' an is the Muslim scripture.

R-Ramadan
The ninth month of the Muslim calendar in which Muslims fast.

S-Shari' ah
The Muslim code of law which is Muslim duties for God, guides them in their personal behavior and relationships towards others.

T-Truce with Makkans
The Muslims and Makkans agreed that Muslims could make pilgrimages to Makkah. In 630 C.E. that truce was broken. The Muslims responded by taking over Makkah and dedicated the Ka' bah to one God.

U-Ummah
A united community which blended many people and cultures.

V-Veil
A head scarf worn by women to cover their hair.

W-Wali
A guardian or protector; Abu Talib was Muhammad's protector since a young age.

xyz - Zakat
The third pillar which says for the wealthy to share their money with the less fortunate.
