A KING IN MICHIGAN?

A new group came to Michigan called the Mormons. Their leader was James Jesse Strang.

They were attacked which made them leave Illinois is 1847. This forced them to move to beaver island. There they hoped for peace.

There were problems soon after with the people of Charlevoix and Mackinac.

Strang ruled himself king in 1850. This actually helped him become elected to the Michigan Legislature.

In 1856, James Strang was shot by one of his followers and without his leadership his members of his group left the island.
